Pete spent the last 17 years living in the north-west of England whilst studying and working in archaeology. His previous archaeological experience has taken him from Cumbria to the United Arab Emirates, although the majority of his time has been taken up with working on archaeological sites across a swathe of Northern England from Liverpool to Nottinghamshire. He now lives in York.

Following an undergraduate degree at the University of Liverpool he has spent the last 13 years working on/running summer training excavations for undergraduate students from various universities, of which Liverpool students have been a constant factor. His work with University of Manchester Archaeological Unit allowed him to develop a keen interest in cross-Pennine Roman landscapes and cultural links, as well as endowing him with an appreciation for late Post Medieval archaeology.

Pete thinks the Dig Hungate excavation is going to be fantastic and knows how lucky he is to be directing such an important and potentially ground breaking project. He firmly believes that archaeology and heritage should be accessible to all, in whatever way possible, and that he will strive for this over the next 5 years. If at times he fails he would like to point out now that he is only human!

He was born in Scotland in the same year as York Archaeological Trust was created (you can go and work that out for yourself) and spent his pre-university years living in Scotland. He has never excavated in Scotland and wonders if, after all of these years, he would be allowed to.
